Helmke Hepach studied Marine Environmental Sciences at the Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg in Germany with stays at the Università degli Studi di Perugia, Italy and the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada from 2004 to 2009. Starting in 2009, she worked as a Research Assistant at the Institut für Meereskunde GEOMAR Kiel, Germany (IfM-GEOMAR, later on GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel) in the Chemical Oceanography department and finished her PhD in 2014 at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, Germany. The thesis with the title "Marine Emissions of Halogenated Trace Gases from the Tropical Ocean" was awarded the KOMPASS Price for innovative, maritime, scientific works from Schleswig-Holstein in 2015 (first place).

After a Post-Doc position at GEOMAR until 2016, she moved to the Environment Department of the University of York, UK where she worked on experiments to decipher the marine inorganic iodine cycle. From 2018 to 2020, Helmke returned to GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and worked in the Biological Oceanography department. In her last project, she worked on implementing a continuous measuring platform for biological parameters in the Southwestern Baltic Sea before joining Earth League in 2021. She spent a total of 32 weeks onboard research vessels between 2009 and 2019.
