The Earth League spotlighted its mission and science-to-policy knowledge products at the 2026 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Annual Meeting, held in Phoenix, Arizona, from February 12–14. The meeting’s theme, “Science @ Scale”. closely aligns with The Earth League’s core mission to produce actionable, globally relevant sustainability science and to bring it into decision‑making.
The AAAS Annual Meeting is a global gathering of scientists, policymakers, and innovators. The Earth League’s participation underscored how just transition research and systems thinking can be implemented at scale to protect people and the planet. Denise Moreno Ramírez, Paula Mirazo, and Angelica Pasqualini were on hand to discuss these themes with the audience and to find out what is missing from the global dialogue about our changing environment.
“It was a great opportunity to step out of our usual comfort zone, and interact with a diverse audience that is not necessarily an Earth Systems expert, and ask their opinion or exchange experiences. I learned a lot,” said Moreno Ramírez about her interaction with the audience through their interactive activity. Mirazo stated, “This year’s AAAS theme ‘Science @ Scale’ highlights the importance of expanding research frontiers and crafting knowledge outputs that are accessible and understandable beyond the scientific expert community.” “AAAS26 reminded me that the strength of science lies in its public value—when research connects with society. That connection is a powerful driver of change,” said Pasqualini.
The Earth League synthesizes knowledge across the integrated human and biophysical domains of the Earth system and co-produces knowledge with diverse international scientists – the type of systems science that Science @ Scale calls for.
