Mirazo Represents The Earth League Secretariat at COP30

This November, the annual meeting of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30), was held in Belém, Brazil. The Earth League played a pivotal role in supporting the design and development of the first Planetary Science Pavilion, in partnership with the COP30 Presidency (link to previous news). The purpose of the pavilion was to bridge science and diplomacy, celebrate ancestral and Indigenous knowledge, and inspire collaboration toward a just, resilient, and 1.5°C-aligned future.

Paula Mirazo represented The Earth League Secretariat at the COP30 Planetary Science Pavilion. She was busy, not just coordinating the usual science-policy sessions and side events, but also networking with other scientists and translating science to diverse audiences. Months before, Mirazo worked on the coordination team, where she supported the development of the program speakers and themes.

“I feel honored to have represented The Earth League at COP30. It was encouraging to see the Brazilian Presidency’s commitment to spotlighting science, reflected in the flagship Planetary Science Pavilion. However, while these actions are important, at a broader level, it is clear that more must be done to translate research into urgent action. We need to keep pushing those in decision-making spaces to not only acknowledge, but act on, the urgency of climate change.”

A highlight of her involvement was her participation in the session, “We Don’t Have Time Science Briefing on the 10 New Insights.” Mirazo participated in this live podcast alongside Wendy Brodgate and Deliang Chen, which featured an overview of the 2025 10 New Insights in Climate Science and a broader conversation on scientific collaboration and the role of science at COP events.
